Mass for Freedom re-explores the sacred roots of five African-American spirituals that became anthems of protest during the Civil Rights movement. Scored for large mixed chorus and a 24-piece chamber orchestra, the work combines the spirituals with text from the Latin Mass Ordinary (in English translation) and additional words by a certain Michael T. Roberts, M.M., A.B., D.A. Advance tickets are $20. All seating is general admission. Oakland Symphony Chorus Spring Concert Lynne Morrow, director Saturday, April 13, 2019, 8:00pm First Congregational Church 2501 Harrison St. Oakland, CA The Mass will comprise the entire second half of the program. The first half will be a great assortment of spirituals, including many of the ones I adopted as source material for the Mass, such as "Kumbaya/Come By Here," "Ain't Got Time to Die," and "We Shall Overcome."
The orchestration is finished, the parts are going out to players, and I attended my first chorus rehearsal just the other night. After a year-and-a-half of work, it's getting real! The Symphony is making a documentary video of the process that I hope to share with you soon. Get your tickets! Come on out! It's gonna be a party! Comments are closed.
